FORGIVE & LIVE FEARLESSLY: A Conversation with Dr. Joan Samuels-Dennis PH.D
Context: In this edition of summer preview season, I talk with Dr. Joan Samuels-Dennis PH.D. She is the director and founder of Becoming Inc. She practices and teaches a "holistic style" of forgiveness that has helped many overcome mental and physical health problems. She lives and operates in Canada.
It was truly a privilege to have this discussion with Dr. Joan. As one who, traveled through forgiveness herself. We learn from both educational training and life experience the process, necessity and power of true, authentic forgiveness. We first are introduced to the concept of “the room”. The room is “a memory often found between the ages of three and thirteen years. For some the room is connected to the womb. Still, for others atrocities like rape, war and genocide bring the room into your adult years. The room contains many kinds of strife and suffering. Once you reenter this room, revisit this memory not to fret it but to heal it.
Here you choose to forgive. First you start by identifying the individual. Ask yourself this one important question; what did I want that this person did not give me? The process continues as you go into the deep depths of the moment offense was birthed. You can learn more about this directly from the doctor in this video below.
Why this matters: Forgiveness is extremely important to your health both mentally and physically. It is decision you make to let go of the expectation that “it”, whatever “it” is could’ve turned out any differently. Be patient, because forgiveness is a process, but stay committed to the peace you long for. Dr. Joan’s book is available, 490: Forgive and Live Fearlessly is available for purchase here.
